23 Mar walking football travelS to Pompey!!
Last week the Wycombe Wanderers Walking footballer Malcolm travelled to Portsmouth for a Walking Football Festival with clubs represented from all over the country.
The standard of walking football has improved over the last few years and this tournament was proof of this development. The standard of ability was far greater than previous tournaments before and highly competitive, but the players were incredibly friendly, the banter was terrific and everybody really enjoyed the day..
A great example of this was when the team from Southampton were asked to come forward to be allocated to the groups and there was an audible but good hearted booing…
Portsmouth Walking football organised a terrific buffet for everyone afterwards and medals for everybody who took part.
Malcolm from the WWFC waling footballers had this to say about the festival..
“I will definitely go back next year, it was so good and I reckon next years event will be even bigger..
I played in the sky blue team and was able to wear my Wycombe Kit… we won the first three games so came top of our pool.. we were the only team to take a point off the eventual winners, but unluckily lost our last game and came third overall…
My wife Sheila went with me and was made to feel so welcome and really enjoyed the day”.
Who would have thought 4 or 5 years ago that a band of the grey brigade would be still playing football and really enjoying it.. and the standard from when they started 3 years ago has improved incredibly… as many players who first join. they find it is hard to resist running.. and the distance you travel in a game is incredible.. . but everyone who has ever been involved in this fantastic form of the beautiful game has mention.. it is so so enjoyable to be involved in!
