30 Aug Register your team for the new Inter-Mosque League
In May 2018 WWSET delivered a fantastic 8-a-side football tournament for local mosque teams under the floodlights at Adams Park, the aim of which was to bring together young people from various parts of High Wycombe in a joint celebration of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
Attended by nearly 70 players representing mosques in the Wycombe area, with an estimated further 100+ watching from the stands, the tournament ran from midnight to 2.30am and then concluded with a customary pre-dawn (Sehri) meal. The reason for the midnight kick-off time was to ensure no clash with prayer commitments and also to allow the players to close their daily fast and therefore avoid playing on an empty stomach.
It was clear from the hugely positive feedback received from the participants following the tournament that they didn’t feel there are sufficient social playing opportunities for Muslim players who live in and around High Wycombe, and that they would be keen on a more long-term provision being offered…
Considering this, Wycombe Wanderers Sports & Education Trust, in partnership with the Berks & Bucks FA, began thinking about ways in which we could offer something suitable and appealing to fill this gap. Subsequently, we were delighted to recently announce our inaugural Inter-Mosque League.
The 7-a-side football league is open to teams representing mosques in Buckinghamshire & Berkshire. Taking place on Sunday evenings over a duration of 22 weeks, the league will be complemented by a knock-out cup competition (with the winners progressing to the national FA Peoples Cup tournament), as well as an end-of-season league winners awards ceremony which will take place at Adams Park.
Aqeel Akram, the Social Inclusion manager for WWSET, had this to say about the new league:
“It’s fantastic for us to announce the new Inter Mosque League and we are very much looking forward to providing a positive football participation opportunity to our local Muslim community.
As a local Muslim person myself I’m acutely aware that there’s a huge love of football within the local Islamic community but this isn’t demonstrated when looking at the number of Muslims playing regular organized or affiliated grassroots football…
We’re really hopeful that this league will go a long way to closing that participation gap and are confident it will also be a great way for us as the town’s football club to positively engage with the people who live in the area.”
For anybody who wishes to play in the league please note that entries should be made by a team captain/manager using WWSET’s online booking system which can be found on the SET website (www.wwset.co.uk) along with other key information to be considered before entry.
However, please don’t delay as there’s only space for 12 teams to register!
