At Wycombe Wanderers Football Club, we have a proud and historic reputation in the development of young players in preparing them for long careers in professional levels.
In recent years several of our Wycombe Wanderers youth team players have graduated to play at Premiership and Championship level – Matt Phillips (QPR), Jordon Ibe (Liverpool), Mike Williamson (Newcastle), Roger Johnson (West Ham United), Kadeem Harris (Cardiff City), Charles Dunne (Blackpool), Matt Ingram (QPR) and Russell Martin (Norwich City) to name just a few.
The main aim of the Elite Development Academy has always been to minimise the difference in standards between the strongest grassroots players and the level required to be signed by professional clubs and their academies.
To achieve this, we use our WWSET Elite Centre to run squads from under 6s to under 15s, where the players receive up to four hours of professional coaching each week to help shape their development. We also help organise competitive games during school holidays against matching age teams at other professional clubs – recently we’ve held games against Reading, Oxford United and Northampton Town.
The heartbeat of our success at nurturing young talent though comes from our footballing philosophy, which is based around the belief that focused training and repetition of challenging exercises will encourage growth when held in an environment that promotes freedom of expression and without putting unnecessary stress on the players.
We are extremely proud of the fact that over 75 players have graduated from our EDA Academy to professional club academies including: Chelsea, Arsenal, Reading and Tottenham Hotspur. We monitor their progress closely and have the upmost belief that they will make it to the very best of the professional game.
The Elite Development Academy Aims:
– To stretch & challenge talented players giving them the opportunity to grow and reach their full potential.
– To provide the highest quality of football coaching to all participants.
– To assist in shaping good behaviours as well as talent, promoting teamwork and sportsmanship.
Lewis Bloom – Elite Development Academy Manager said this about this programme: “Our EDA programme has been greatly successful over the years with so many of our players progressing to being signed academy players and graduates. We believe this to be a product of our “hardest working team” mentality in which both our players and coaching staff aim to be the hardest working both on and off the pitch. Our primary aim as mentioned is to help all of our players progress to their full potential and by following our comprehensive “Play The EDA Way” philosophy and coaching framework we continue to deliver time and time again”
