04 Jun WWSET first ever Volunteering Training!
WWSET, in partnership with Empower to Cook, delivered a 4 week Volunteer Training Programme teaching our 7 willing volunteers how to teach others to cook and encourage families to get more active.
As part of our Fit and Fed Programme, which looks to support families that “feel the pinch” during the holidays, we teamed up with 2 Community Impact Companies – Empower to Cook and Khepera. The aim of this collaboration was to provide children and their families with cooking tutorials, fun physical activities and a free meal for the whole family ensuring children went back to school fit and healthy after the break. Throughout the Programme we had parents and local people come forward asking to volunteer and improve their skills. So, we thought why not take it one step further..!
WWSET & Empower to Cook devised a 4 week training programme which would teach the volunteers how to:
– Set up a kitchen and sporting area
– Engage and manage large groups
– Improve their Time Management
– Encourage children and adults to get more active
– Teach people how to cook simple and healthy meals – avoiding food waste
– Be adaptable
As well as all of this, we offered all our volunteers an online training course package where they could gain access to a range of online learning courses too. We wanted to support people to improve their skills, learn something new, improve their confidence and help them on their way to possible employment – of which we think the course definitely helped our volunteers.
One of the volunteers said:
“It was great to push myself out of my comfort zone to learn something new. It was great to also meet new people and I now feel more confident to cook and get active myself and support others”
Since the programme began we have already seen some of the volunteers help us within our May Holiday Fit and Fed programme and hope to see more of them helping their communities in the future.
